Local Charity CamSmile reaches its 1st year anniversary (featured in July/August CCVS Newsletter 2013)
CamSmile is a relatively new member of CCVS and is making huge progress since its establishment in July 2012. Mary Newbold, CamSmile Trustee, would encourage everyone who is thinking of starting a new group to get in touch with their local CVS. " We have come a long way from my first telephone call to CCVS where I was able to get a professional advice and help by a very friendly and resourceful staff team. They were one of my first points of contact and have provided very useful advice and information to our group and their newsletters about the latest grants/meetings are very useful.’
CamSmile (Cambridge Smile) was set up to support Cleft Lip and/or Palate care and self sustaining Plastic Surgery in the developing world. The charity supports the work of Mr Per Hall (Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Operation Smile Volunteer) and his team in developing countries where cleft care is not easily available to everyone. Mr Hal together with other OPERATION SMILE medical volunteers, help patients with clefts and are also committed to developing sustainable cleft care by training local surgeons.
CamSmile was successful in obtaining a grant from the CCVS Rag Ballot this year to produce publicity material, both to raise awareness of its work and to help in its fundraising. So far the charity, run entirely by volunteers, has raised £720 towards its £4,000 target. Have a look at the website for more news and information about CamSmile and its work.

PRESENTATION BY MR HALL AT THE NHS RF MEETING ON THE 27TH OF NOVEMBER 2013
One of the most inspiring and moving talk about cleft care in the developing world, given by Mr Hall. We raised £155 from the sale of our Christmas Cards and £235.33 by their members’ kind and very generous donations on the day. There were many lovely comments about Mr Hall’s selfless work and everyone enjoyed very much the presentation. We hope that there will be similar events in the near future. We would like to thank Mr Hall for giving us his time and presenting about his work in Jimma Hospital and for his kind donation of £50 given to CamSmile, in lieu of his NHS RF gift.
ADDENBROOKE’S ABROAD WEEK, 26th to 30th of November 2012
I was lovely to hear about Addenbrooke’s Abroad work and raise awareness of Mr Hall’s work with the Operation Smile. Karan and Mary attended the event, met many other medical charities involved in the global health and officially launched CamSmile.
£700 cheque presented to Karan Harris, by Mr John Parker, Chairman, NHS Retirement Fellowship. May 2014.
